On Saturday morning 15 April the Old Shire Hall at 777 Old Calder Highway in Keilor overflowed with residents concerned about the impacts of the proposed third runway. With the federal transport minister, the Hon. Catherine King currently assessing Melbourne Airport’s third runway proposal, over 150 locals met to find out before it’s too late what a 3rd runway would mean for them. Brimbank Council, who have called for an independent third runway health impacts assessment, Brimbank Council provided the venue for the meeting organised by the No 3rd Tulla Runway coalition.
Margaret Giudice chaired the meeting, and speakers included Brimbank City Councillor Virginia Tachos on the shortcomings of Melbourne Airport’s Third Runway Major Development Plan that make it impossible to approve, Mark Carter (Flight Free Australia) on the increased emissions that will be enabled by the runway, Bernadette Thomas (local resident and Green party member) on the global impact of an expanding aviation industry, Kay Shields (Primary school teacher of 40 years) on the impacts on early childhood development from expected noise levels, Michael Howson (local GP of 40 years) on the impacts on the adult population from expected noise levels, Alana Bacon (local resident, environmentalist and Animal Justice Party member) on the impacts a new runway will have on the local environment, and Frank Rivoli. Speakers focussed on reasons why approval of the proposed third runway should be denied, including: • inadequate public consultation by Melbourne Airport • Melbourne Airport’s failure to release any independent health impact study • their egregious under-reporting of warming emissions likely enabled by a third runway • the Major Development Plan’s failure to address Melbourne Airport’s emissions reductions obligations under the Climate Change 2022 Act • the major risk from increased emissions to the operation of a third runway, and • the absence of any designated offsets for the clear felling of over 130 hectares of federal EPBC Act protected bushland and endangered species habitat. Attendees signed up to be consulted asap on the actions now required to halt the runway.
